About us
A Community-Driven Approach to Lasting Change
HEARTS OF HELPING HANDS is a focused, community-based non-profit organization that serves as a vital bridge between available resources and the individuals who need them most in the Tacoma area. Our organizational structure is built on accessibility and responsiveness, prioritizing immediate, tangible assistance while simultaneously developing long-term strategies for self-sufficiency. This involves operating several key initiatives, including mobile outreach units that deliver necessities directly to underserved neighborhoods, running skills-based workshops focused on financial literacy and career readiness, and managing an extensive resource referral network that connects clients with everything from mental health services to legal aid. We understand that challenges rarely exist in isolation; a lack of food often correlates with housing instability, which can be linked to employment barriers. Therefore, our model is holistic, meaning we address multiple intersecting needs for each person or family we serve, providing continuous case management and personalized support plans. We strive to be more than just a provider of resources; we aim to be a trusted partner in the journey toward stability, upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and, most importantly, compassion in every interaction we facilitate and every program we execute on the ground.

Our Story
From a Simple Idea to a Movement of Compassion
HEARTS OF HELPING HANDS was founded five years ago out of a deeply felt recognition that while many large-scale charitable efforts exist, the specific, immediate needs of the South Tacoma neighborhood were often overlooked or inadequately addressed by one-size-fits-all solutions. Our founders, a small group of long-time Tacoma residents, initially started by pooling personal resources and dedicating their evenings and weekends to delivering warm meals and basic supplies to unhoused individuals and struggling families they personally knew within their immediate vicinity. The informal network quickly revealed the magnitude of the need, confirming that many residents were only one unexpected bill or crisis away from severe instability. The initial “office” was a kitchen table, and the first “fleet” was a single minivan, but the core vision was immediately clear: to create an organization defined by direct service, personalized care, and zero bureaucratic barriers to receiving help. This grassroots beginning cemented our organizational DNA, ensuring that HOHH would always remain nimble, client-focused, and deeply empathetic, allowing us to build authentic relationships with the people we serve, relationships that form the true bedrock of our successful community interventions and define our approach to every challenge.
What We Do
Providing the Tools for Stability, Independence, and Thriving
HEARTS OF HELPING HANDS offers a carefully curated suite of support programs that address the immediate, critical needs of individuals and families while simultaneously laying the groundwork for long-term self-sufficiency and emotional resilience. Our programs are categorized into three main areas: Basic Needs Stability, Empowerment and Mentorship, and Community Connection. The Basic Needs Stability category encompasses our food and hygiene pantry services, emergency financial assistance for rent or utilities, and clothing drives to ensure all community members have access to fundamental necessities regardless of their economic situation. The Empowerment and Mentorship stream includes structured workshops on budgeting, resume writing, interview skills, and personalized, ongoing mentorship pairing that provides clients with a dedicated, supportive accountability partner to navigate complex job searches or educational transitions. Finally, the Community Connection category focuses on reducing social isolation by hosting weekly, family-friendly events, support groups for single parents, and neighborhood cleanup projects that build civic pride and communal bonds. Each program operates with clear, accessible entry points and is integrated with our case management system to ensure that clients are seamlessly referred to other HOHH services or external partner organizations, guaranteeing a truly coordinated and effective continuum of care that addresses the whole person and their entire family system.
